Awake

August 29, 2006 · Leave a Comment

It was 1 am…  It’s now latter.  I have the Doors and covers of the Doors playing because I remember some Doors song having a line about being awake.  I can’t seem to remember what song it is.  Neither can iTunes.

I sit here with a feeling that I’ve had before: when I was up three rounds at the first WDCA LD State Tournament feeling good about my chances to claim the first championship oh so many years ago, or the night before my first and second WFCA State Speech tournaments as a coach – not knowing how the next day would pan out, if we had picked the right kids, or if we had worked hard enough for them, or the night before starting my first classes here.  I’m neverous, excited, and so not ready to fall asleep.

Part of that is my fault.  I have not been able to get off of the third shift sleeping schedule for grand total of two days that I had off in between stopping work and starting grad school.  Tomorrow I start grad school, and I can’t believe it.  It’s only orientation – but somehow this feels different.  As if I am starting, and beginning to make progress.  Progress at what, is anyone’s guess.  But I tell you what, this feels a lot better than being frustrated about money or my car.

Ah!  Here we go!  “The Ghost Song”…  the lyrics are pretty much stoned poetry after that first word.  I guess on that realization, I’ll try and get some sleep.
